The name of the organization shall be the Law
Society of the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater.
Article II. Purpose
Section
1. The Law Society
shall make known the principles and promote them among the students
of the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater.
Section
2. The Law Society
shall encourage college students to become involved in the area of
law as well as provide useful information and resources for the
prospects of Law School or Graduate School.
Section
3. The Law Society
shall develop legal skills and leadership abilities among its
members as preparation for future endeavors in the field of law.
Section
4. The Law Society
shall create and sustain a healthy social environment in which all
students are welcome. And encouraged to be involved and voice their
opinion.
Article III.
Membership
Section
1. A general member
shall be any student at the University of
Wisconsin –
Whitewater who endorses the purpose stated in Article II of this
Constitution and has properly expressed their intent to be a member.
To properly express intent and be considered an active
member, the student must attend at least 2/3’s of the meetings and
pay the dues of $10/semester.
Section
2. Duration of
membership shall be one school semester.
Thereafter, membership must be renewed.
Article IV.
Officers
Section
1. The officers of
the Law Society of the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, in
descending order of succession, shall be composed of a president,
vice president, secretary, treasurer, promotion director, and social
programmer.
Section
2. All officers are
elected positions and terms are one year in length.
Section
3. The duties of
the officers shall be to uphold the organization’s Constitution,
maintaining order, and promote a pleasant social environment.
Subsection A.
Duties of the President shall be:
1.Preside
over all meetings of the Law Society.
2.Coordinate
the work of the elected officers, to the extent that there is a
complete performance of their duties.
3.With
the consent of the Executive Board, create all services and actions
necessary to administer the Law Society.
4.Serve
as Chairperson of the Executive Board.
5.Coordinate
and obtain guest speakers and planned excursions for the duration of
their term.
Subsection
B. Duties of the
Vice President shall be:
1.Assume
the duties of the president in his/her absence.
2.Aid
in planning excursions and obtaining guest speakers.
3.Reserve
a meeting room each semester.
4.Serve
as representative of the Law Society on the Dean’s Advisory
Council.
Subsection
C. Duties of the
Secretary shall be:
1.Maintain
a record of all meetings.
2.Act
as a custodian of the official records of the Law Society.
3.Keep
a list of all current members including their phone number, address,
e-mail address, and prepare an updated directory for each semester.
4.Maintain
an active file listing the participation of each member in Law
Society excursions and meetings.
Subsection
D. Duties of the
Treasurer shall be:
1.Collect
all dues and money owed to Law Society and keep proper books on
account showing receipts, disbursements, and balances.
2.Submit
a financial report at the request of the Executive Board.
3.Deposit
all moneys collected into the Law Society’s account.
4.Propose
a budget at the first Executive Board meeting each semester.
Subsection
E. Duties of the
Promotional Director shall be:
1.Promotion
of the Law Society throughout the University of Wisconsin –
Whitewater.
2.Assist
in obtaining guest speakers and planning excursions for term.
3.Recruit
new members.
4.Design
and distribute all promotional flyers and products throughout
campus.
Subsection
F. Duties of Social
Programmer shall be:
1.Plan
all social events for the chapter.
2.Coordinate
programs between the Law Society and other campus organizations.
3.Plan
other educational events other than guest speakers.
Article V. Elections,
Vacancies, and Appointments
Section
1. Elections and
vacancies will be dealt with by a nomination by the nominee
themselves or by another member and approved by a majority vote of
the active members present.
Section
2. Qualification of
officers to be nominated are one semester as an active member.
Section
3. Elections shall
be conducted on an annual basis at the end of the spring semester.
Section
4. There shall be
no term limits for any Law Society Officer that has been appointed
to the Executive Board, given they are reelected annually.
Article VI.
Meetings
Section
1. 2/3’s of all
meetings are mandatory for general members to be considered active
and all meetings are mandatory for Executive Board members.
Section
2. Regular meetings
shall be held on a specific day every other week for approximately,
but not limited to one hour.
Section
3. Regular meetings
shall be held no less than once every thirty days while the
University of Wisconsin – Whitewater is in session.
Section
4. 1/3 of all
active members shall constitute the quorum.
Article VII.
Finances
Section
1. Expenses
incurred by members including, but not limited to, supplies,
excursions, promotional products, and fundraising activities, shall
be reimbursed with club moneys, provided that receipt(s) are
submitted and expenses are relevant.
Section
2. The President
and Treasurer shall hold the authority to open and use a
dual-signature checking account on behalf of Law Society.
Article VIII.
Amendments
Section
1. Amendments to
this Constitution must be brought before the Law Society and
approved a 2/3’s vote of the active members present.
Article IX.
Ratification
Upon the approval of
the majority of active members present at the meeting, this
Constitution shall become the effective governing document of the
Law Society of the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater,
superseding all previous documents.
