The Constitution of UW-Whitewater
Student Affiliates Chapter
of the American Chemical Society
- Article 1: Name and Location
- The name of this Society shall be the UW-Whitewater Student
Affiliates of the ACS(American Chemical Society) and shall be based at
the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in Whitewater, Wisconsin.
- Article 2: Classification and Sponsorship
- This organization shall be classified as a professional society
for the students interested in Chemistry; shall be open to both men and
women; and shall be sponsored by the members.
- Article 3: Purpose
- The purpose of this chapter shall be:
- To afford an opportunity for students of a chemical science
to become better acquainted
- To secure the intellectual stimulation that arises from
professional association
- To obtain experience in preparing and presenting technical
material before chemical audiences
- To foster a professional spirit among the members
- To instill a professional pride in the chemical sciences
- To foster an awareness of the responsibilities and challenges
of the modern Chemist
- Article 4: Membership
- There shall be 3 classes of membership in this society: Chapter,
Affiiliate, Associate. The prerequisites for the memberships are as
follows:
- Chapter - Maintains an interest in Chemistry and have Chapter
dues paid.
- Affiliate - Maintains an interest in Chemistry, have Chapter
dues paid, and is an Affiliate member of ACS.
- Associate - Maintains an interest in Chemistry, have Chapter
dues paid, and is an Associate member of ACS.
- Article 5: Government and Society

- The governing body of the society shall be a President, a
Vice-President, a Secretary, a Treasurer, and a Public Relations
Officer who shall constitute the Executive Comittee.
- The officers shall be elected at the first meeting in April
from eligible nominees who are taken from the floor at that time.
- They shall take office at the end of the spring semester and
shall hold office for one year or until their successors are duly
elected.
- Special elections of officers are to take place when
necessary to fill a vacancy of office, specially elected officers shall
complete the term of the vacated office. Any office may, however, be
re-elected for a full term.
- The Executive committee may create or abolish a Chapter
Officer position as needed; these officers may be filled by any Chapter
member. These created offices will have no Executive Committee power.
- Article 6: Duties of Officers

- The President shall preside at Executive Committee and
chapter meetings and shall appoint all committees not otherwise
provided for.
- The Vice-President acts for the President when he or she is
unavailable for chapter activities. The Vice-President should help over
see all committees and generally share the workload of the President.
- The Secretary's responsiblities include recording the minutes
of all meetings, compiling the membership roster, listing committee
assignments, compiling calenders of activities, handling chapter
correspondence, and ordering supplied or materials from ACS
headquarters.
- The Treasurer's job involves basic financial management; this
responsibility includes balancing the checkbook, reporting and
projecting income, and recording all cash advances and handling
reimbursements. The Treasurer should submit a financial statement to
the chapter president at the end of the year.
- The Public Relations Officer's job is to publicize all
Chapter activities and act as a liasion between the Executive Comittee
and the Chapter.
- Article 7: Faculty Advisors
- The Chapter at its annual election shall elect as its Faculty
Advisor a faculty member who is a member of the ACS, whose duties shall
be to advise the Chapter both in its local activities and in its
relations with the ACS. The Advisor shall be kept informed of all
Chapter activities and shall advise the Chapter on any policy matters.
- Article 8: Professional Advisor
- The Chapter at its annual election may select as its Professional
Advisor a non-faculty member of the ACS. This person shall assisst the
Chapter in its relations with the Local Section of the Society and with
the industrial community.
- Article 9: Meetings
- Regular Chapter meetings shall be held approximately once a
month. Executive Committee meetings shall be held as needed. The
Chapter President can call a meeting of the Executive Committee with
reasonable notice. Special events may be arranged through the Executive
Committee. There shall be at least four activities per year.
- Article 10: Dues
- The annual national dues of the Student Affiliates shall be sent
individually to the Society or may be transmitted by the Treasurer of
the Chapter. Local dues of $10.00 shall be collected annually by the
Treasurer of the Chapter. If a member joins after the fall semester,
dues will be half of the yearly dues for the remaining spring semester.
If annual dues ar not paid by October 1st, a late fee may be charged of
20% of the local yearly dues. Membership in the Chapter is limited to
those who have paid local dues.
- Article 11: Annual Reports
- The Chapter shall send to the ACS Office of College Chemistry an
annual report of its activities. This report shall be submitted on the
Student Affiliate Chapter annual report form sent to the Chapter in
Spring. The Society shall be informed promptly of the results of all
elections of officers and Faculty Advisors.
- Article 12: Parliamentary Authority
- The rules contained in the current edition of Robert's Rules
of Order Newly Revised shall govern the Chapter in all cases to
which they are applicable and which they are not consistent with the
constitution and any special rules of order the Chapter may adopt.
- Article 13: Amendements
- The Constitution may be amended by a 2/3 vote of the members,
provided that the amendment shall have been proposed in writing at
least one meeting previous to the time of voting. Such amendments shall
conform to the ACS regulations established for Student Affiliates
Chapters.
